When Not to Guess

Uncertainty is an identification skill

A confident answer is not always possible from the available evidence. Knowing when to stop protects people, prevents misidentification, and keeps rare records credible.

The final step in expert identification is not naming the snake. It is deciding whether the evidence deserves a name. A blurry photograph can trigger a strong visual impression while hiding the exact feature that separates two species.

“Insufficient evidence” is not failure. It is a precise description of the record and a cue for the safest next action.

Stop when the diagnostic feature is absent

A head-only image cannot establish body pattern. A coiled snake partly covered by leaves may hide the width and sequence of crossbands. A dark nighttime photograph may erase color boundaries. A top view may conceal lip markings; a side view may conceal whether rings continue across the belly. The safe identification guide explains which views are useful without moving closer.

Do not mentally fill in those missing areas. State what the photograph supports and which unresolved feature would separate the candidates.

Color alone is weak evidence

A “black snake,” “brown snake,” or “green snake” description leaves many possibilities. Age, approaching shed, mud, shadow, overexposure, and camera processing can all alter perceived color. Pattern may fade in older individuals, and juveniles may look unlike adults.

If the identification depends on a subtle shade that the camera cannot reproduce consistently, lower the confidence and seek structural traits.

Behavior does not rescue a poor photograph

Swimming, climbing, tail vibration, flattening the head, striking, or remaining still can narrow ecological possibilities, but none is a unique species signature. A frightened harmless snake may act like a person’s idea of a venomous snake. A venomous snake may quietly leave.

Use behavior as context after morphology and range, not as a substitute for them.

Rare and out-of-range records need more proof

An eastern coral snake, eastern diamondback rattlesnake, or other rare species report can matter to conservation. It also deserves especially careful review. Apply the expert’s comparison workflow: ask whether the location is plausible, whether common look-alikes have been eliminated, and whether the photograph shows diagnostic features.

Do not move or detain the animal for proof. Record a safe photograph, date, time, and location. NC Wildlife currently asks the public to report rattlesnake and northern pine snake sightings through its published reporting channels.

A bite is not an identification exercise

If someone is bitten by an unknown snake, do not delay medical care while searching for a name. Do not capture or kill the snake. The CDC advises getting medical help immediately and taking a photograph only if it can be done from a safe distance.

Call 911 or North Carolina Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Follow professional instructions. Do not use a tourniquet, cut the wound, suck out venom, or return to the snake for a closer image.

Ask for evidence, not proximity

When helping with an identification, request the county, habitat, approximate length, time, and any additional photographs already taken from a safe distance. Do not ask someone to uncover the snake, move it into better light, touch it, or photograph the underside. The same restraint guides responsible snake observation.

Compare the candidates with current NC Wildlife, NC State Extension, and museum resources. For a naturally shed skin, a natural history museum may be able to use scale arrangement and other details that a field photograph cannot show.

Use confidence language

“Confirmed” should be reserved for visible diagnostic evidence. “Probable” means the combination is strong but not complete. “Possible” means the candidate remains but alternatives have not been excluded. “Unidentified snake” can be the correct record.

The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty from nature. It is to represent the evidence faithfully and make the safest decision while uncertainty remains.
